when visitors step into a China Light Festival, they see glowing dragons soaring overhead, underwater worlds shimmering with colour, and magical creatures waiting around every corner.
What they don’t see is that every lantern, every pathway, and every interactive moment has already been imagined months before the first steel frame is ever assembled.
Behind every festival lies an extensive design process where creativity, craftsmanship, engineering and storytelling come together. It’s a process that begins with a simple question: how do you create a world that visitors don’t just walk through, but truly become part of?
Every festival starts with a story
At China Light Festival, no two events are ever the same. Whether it’s an underwater adventure in Antwerp, a fantasy world in Halle, or illuminated wildlife in Brittany, every festival begins with a central story. That story shapes everything that follows. From the first sketches and lantern concepts to the visitor route and interactive experiences.
Rather than designing individual lanterns, the creative team designs an entire journey. Each installation has its own purpose. Some create moments of awe, others encourage visitors to slow down, while others are designed to surprise or invite interaction. Together, they form one continuous experience where every scene naturally leads to the next.
As one of our senior designers explains:
“A good lantern festival is like a film. It has a beginning, a climax and an ending. When visitors leave, they should feel like they’ve experienced a complete story.”
Designing for darkness
One of the most fascinating aspects of lantern design is that everything is created during the day, but designed for the night. During construction, lanterns may appear as steel frames covered in colourful fabric. But our designers aren’t judging how they look under the sun. Every decision is made with darkness in mind.
Colours change once illuminated from within. Different fabrics diffuse light in unique ways. Even the placement of a lantern depends on how it will appear after sunset.
Before installation begins, our senior designers carefully walk every venue. They study existing trees, pathways, sightlines and natural surroundings to determine exactly where each lantern should be placed. The goal isn’t simply to fill the space with beautiful sculptures. It’s to guide visitors through a carefully choreographed experience where every turn reveals something new.
Ancient craftsmanship meets modern innovation
Every lantern at China Light Festival is handcrafted using techniques that originate from Zigong, China, the world-renowned home of traditional lantern artistry.
Steel frames are bent by hand. Fabrics are stretched and carefully attached. Every surface is painted by skilled artisans who have inherited techniques passed down through generations.
But while the craftsmanship remains deeply traditional, the experiences continue to evolve. Today, our Design and Research & Development teams work closely together to combine ancient craftsmanship with modern technologies. The result is a new generation of lantern festivals where tradition and innovation exist side by side.

Creating experiences visitors can interact with
One of the biggest developments in recent years has been the growing role of interactive installations. Visitors no longer want to simply admire beautiful displays, they want to engage with them. That is why many of our newest lanterns invite people to become part of the story.
Children can make magical creatures move. Families can trigger changing colours through touch or movement. Interactive musical installations allow visitors to create their own moments of wonder, while intelligent lighting systems respond dynamically to the people around them. These experiences encourage visitors to explore, play and return to discover something new.
For our design team, interaction isn’t an extra feature added afterwards. It’s considered from the very beginning of the creative process. The question is never “how can we make this lantern interactive?” Instead, it’s “how can interaction make the story even more memorable?”

Looking ahead: designing the future of lantern festivals
Innovation has become an important part of every new project. Artificial intelligence is already supporting our designers during the creative process, helping them explore new concepts, optimise structures and visualise ideas more efficiently.
At the same time, AI is finding its way into the visitor experience itself. Interactive sensing systems, motion tracking, intelligent lighting, and responsive animations allow lanterns to react in real time to the people around them.
Imagine talking to a magical sea creature that changes the colours of an underwater world. Or watching a lantern respond to your movement with flowing light effects. These technologies don’t replace traditional craftsmanship. They enhance it.
By combining centuries-old techniques with modern innovation, China Light Festival continues to create experiences that surprise visitors while honouring the heritage behind every lantern.
More than beautiful lanterns
What ultimately defines a China Light Festival isn’t a single dragon, flower, or illuminated animal. It’s the feeling visitors take home. Every decision, from the route through the venue to the colours inside a lantern, from handcrafted details to interactive technology, is made with one goal in mind: creating unforgettable moments and wonder.
Because when craftsmanship, storytelling and innovation come together, a lantern festival becomes more than an event. It becomes a world that people remember long after the lights go out.
Bringing your venue to life
Every venue has its own character, landscape and story to tell. That’s why China Light Festival is custom designed in close collaboration with our partners. From the first creative concepts to final installations, our Design and R&D teams work together to transform zoos, botanical gardens, parks and cultural venues into immersive nighttime experiences that attract visitors and create lasting memories.
