The artisans behind Europe’s most enchanting lantern festivals

Every China Light Festival begins long before the first lantern lights up.

Before visitors wander through glowing oceans, encounter mythical dragons, or step into worlds of fantasy, hundreds of hours have already been spent designing, shaping, painting and assembling each lantern by hand.

Behind every illuminated festival stands a team of highly skilled artisans whose craft has been passed down through generations. Their work combines centuries-old traditions with modern creativity to transform zoos, botanical gardens, and cultural venues across Europe into immersive worlds of light.

A tradition rooted in Zigong

The origins of modern lantern festivals can be tracked back to Zigong, a city in China’s Sichuan Province that is often referred to as the Lantern Capital of the World.

For centuries, artisans in Zigong have refined the techniques used to create elaborate lantern sculptures. In recognition of its cultural significance, the Zigong Lantern Festival was officially designated as National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China in 2008.

What makes this tradition unique is that it is not learned from textbooks. It is passed down through mentorship and hands-on experience. As Yang Jun, Director of Project Delivery with more than 23 years of experience in the industry, explains:

“Lantern craftsmanship is an intangible cultural heritage. It is passed down through mentorship, often within famillies. Some things cannot be explained through theory alone. They can only be understood through experience.”

Today, many of the artisans working on China Light Festival projects continue this tradition while bringing their expertise to audiences around the world.

More than lantern builders

Creating a lantern is far more complex than most visitors imagine. Every large-scale installation requires multiple specialists working together.

The process begins with designers who develop the concept, scale, and visual identity of the lantern. Structural artisans then transform those drawings into three-dimensional steel frameworks. Electricians install thousands of LED lights and control systems. Finally, the fabric artisans carefully cover and finish every surface before painters apply the final details.

As master designer Luo Ziming explains:

“It requires an understanding of space, materials, mechanics, and artistic design. All of these elements must work together to present the final piece effectively.”

Every lantern that appears at a China Light Festival has passed through many skilled hands before reaching its final destination.

Where ancient craftsmanship meets modern innovation

While the foundation of lantern making remains traditional, the craft continues to evolve. Today’s festivals combine hand-built structures with advanced lighting systems, animation, interactive elements, and even artificial intelligence.

Visitors can trigger lighting effects, influence colours, interact with intstallations, and become active participants in the experience rather than passive observers.

This blend of tradition and innovation is what makes modern lantern festivals so unique. The same craftsmanship that has existed for centuries now works alongside contemporary technology to create experiences that feel immersive, dynamic and relevant to modern audiences.

Every lantern tells a story

For the artisans, lanterns are not simply decorative objects. Every animal, dragon, flower or mythical creature carries meaning.

Traditional symbols such as dragons, phoenixes and lotus flowers have deep cultural significance that has been passed down through generations. Understanding these meanings is just as important as mastering the technical skills needed to build the lantern itself.

“What we aim for is elegance and artistic expression. The forms, colours and symbolism are deeply rooted in Chinese culture and craftsmanship.” — Yang Jun, Director of Project Delivery, Tianyu Arts & Culture

This cultural understanding helps transform a collection of lanterns into a meaningful experience that resonates with visitors from all backgrounds.

Bringing worlds to life across Europe

At China Light Festival, these skills are used to create bespoke exhibitions for venues across Europe. Whether it is a glowing underwater world in Antwerp, a fantasy kingdom in Halle, or illuminated wildlife in Brittany, every festival starts with the same foundation: talented artisans bringing stories to life through light.

Their craftsmanship allows us to create experiences that attract visitors, inspire wonder, and transform familiar spaces into something extraordinary.

A craft that cannot be copied

Technology can replicate light. It cannot replicate craftsmanship. The patience, creativity, cultural knowledge, and artistic intuition required to build a world-class lantern festival are qualities that have been developed over generations.

Every glowing pathway, illuminated animal, and handcrafted sculpture reflects the work of people who have dedicated their lives to preserving and evolving this unique art form. And it is their craftsmanship that makes every China Light Festival truly unforgettable.
