Celebrating 165 Years of Cologne Zoo: A Festival of Light, History, and Partnership

In the winter of 2024–2025, Cologne Zoo commemorated its 165th anniversary with a luminous celebration, once again partnering with China Light Festival B.V. to present an enchanting Lantern festival. This event marked another chapter in a decade-long collaboration that has illuminated the zoo’s grounds with the artistry of traditional Chinese lanterns, captivating visitors year after year.

Honoring the Past, Illuminating the Future

This year’s festival paid homage to the zoo’s rich history and commitment to wildlife conservation. Iconic lantern installations from previous editions made a triumphant return, including the majestic 40-meter-long dragon and the intricate Noah’s Ark, symbolizing biodiversity and the importance of protecting animal species across air, land, and sea.

To keep the experience fresh and engaging, these beloved displays were meticulously refurbished and enhanced with new lighting technologies and interactive elements. Visitors were treated to a blend of nostalgia and novelty, as familiar figures shone with renewed brilliance alongside newly introduced lanterns depicting diverse wildlife and mythical creatures.

Craftsmanship and Innovation Go Hand in Hand

Each lantern was handcrafted by skilled artisans from Zigong, China, renowned for their expertise in traditional lantern-making techniques. The fusion of time-honored craftsmanship with modern LED technology resulted in sustainable, energy-efficient displays that not only dazzled the eye but also underscored a commitment to environmental responsibility.

A Testament to an Enduring Partnership

The ongoing collaboration between China Light Festival B.V. and Cologne Zoo stands as a testament to the power of cultural exchange and shared vision. Over the years, this partnership has brought together art, education, and conservation, creating immersive experiences that resonate with audiences of all ages.

As we celebrate this significant milestone, we look forward to many more years of illuminating the wonders of the natural world through the magic of light.
